A nice way to keep your partner honest is to make them bring the post workout snack next workout if they have to bail. You’re both responsible for keeping each other motivated and on track.
You want to have a workout partner that is available both physically and mentally. Most importantly, you want to have someone with a very similar schedule and availability. Results from working out happen when you are consistent, therefore you want to build a routine. This is very challenging and can lead to inconsistent workouts if you are constantly having to reschedule. You also want your workout partner to be present mentally. This means they are focused on the workout and not taking up time telling you about a rude co-worker or dating trouble.
Motivation comes in many forms, whether someone possesses physical traits and mental fortitude you desire, or are just incredibly supportive and happy. You don’t want your partner to pressure you into swaying from your goals or influence you with bad habits. Most importantly, you want them to be supportive of your goals and efforts, and determined to get you both there.
It’s important to have a workout partner who shares similar goals and a similar fitness level. This way you can relate better when it comes to the challenges you’ll face. You’ll both have your eye on the same prize, and can power through tough workouts together. That being said, they should be fun and easy to get along with. After all, you’re going to be spending a few hours with them every week and you want to enjoy it!
This is especially important for both you and your workout buddy to follow. There should be a healthy balance of advice and critique. Don’t be overly critical, even if you know more about fitness than your partner, and on the flip side, don’t be overly sensitive. An easy rule to follow here is don’t give more advice than you get, especially if it’s not warranted.
